Living Portrait
2014
Living Portrait celebrated and shared the lives of young carers through large-scale installations of photographic sound tableaux. Working collaboratively with Sound Artist Anya Ustaszewski Lynn created a series of moving lens based portraits with sound depicting the environment and lives of young people in and across East Sussex.
The works seeks to reconceptualise the photographic image; in the new innovative work the viewer sees subtle movements, including facial changes, eye movements and breathing rhythms as well as hearing atmospheric sounds.
Expanding the dimensions, shape and context of portraiture through this collaborative the work wishes to offer a gentle subversive, an exploration resulting in ‘breath-taking’ portraits of young carer’s. The subjects themselves are offered the opportunity to explore their sense of self through the act of posing for an extended portrait and being in control of the length of the piece themselves.
